About

In the face of COVID-19, we all find ourselves changing how we go about sourcing the essential goods and services that are needed in our daily lives.

There is a sudden need for delivery services and other alternatives to in-person commerce, as so many people are staying home, working remote and self-isolating. Meanwhile, local businesses are struggling to cope with an entirely new reality economically and in how they operate.

This site is an effort to help people AND the businesses here make it through the COVID-19 pandemic. It's meant to...

  • Highlight and support local business that deliver goods and services safely for all involved -- especially if they've switched because of the current crisis.
  • Help the people of Vancouver find local delivery businesses to support -- not just restaurants, but all types of business, because we're all in this together.
  • Amplify any special offers these local businesses have going on right now.

Businesses in the following areas should jump in and add a listing: Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Langley, Delta, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Port Moody, Langley, White Rock, Pitt Meadows, Bowen Island, Anmore, Lions Bay, Tsawwassen, and Belcarra.

  1. At this point, the biggest help would be to actually order something from several of the businesses and people listed here. They need the help most.
  2. Secondly, tell two friends about this. We want it to go viral (the good kind). Suggested hash tags: #yvrlocaldelivery #supportlocal #covid19vancouver
  3. Third, adding a new listing would be helpful. We love listings. (And lists.)
  4. Lastly, if you want to be of technical assistance, get in touch... we've got more ideas than fingers.

For now, contact us. We will get it taken care of ASAP.

Disclaimer: We do not promise anything about these businesses, and you should always put your health and safety above buying stuff.

The best way to protect against the virus is to have absolutely no contact with anyone or anything that anyone has touched or been within 6 feet of in the past day or two. Virtual / online delivery services, therefore, are the only kind of service that are 100% (biological) virus-free.

That said, the general consensus seems to be that:

  1. We all have to eat and get more of the things we run out of. (You may remember some discussion of toilet paper in the news...)
  2. The virus does not endure that well on organic surfaces, like mail and groceries and takeout food (more).
  3. Food preparation and distribution is already, in general, a fairly well-regulated and safe process, and all of these business owners are aware that there is a health crisis going on.

In addition, everyone submitting a listing makes the following pledges:

  • This business is doing everything possible to ensure safe and sanitary conditions for its staff and customers.
  • This business is operating within the latest regulations and protocols required by your local and provincial governments, the federal government, and all applicable regulatory agencies.

So with these facts in mind, we ask that you to make your own decision about what goods and services to order, in consultation with your doctor and/or religious leader.

Similar, yes, but not the same. Most are restaurant-focused, and are either for Vancouver city only, or for places all across Canada. We're trying to be for a broader audience but not too broad.

If you are aware of any other useful listings or such, let us know, we'd be happy to list it here and share code, advice, etc.

To be clear: we'd really love to collaborate so that the data is submitted once and then used across all these other sites, so business owners don't have to submit multiple times. If you're interested in using our data or sharing ours, get in touch!

If you know of any others, contact us!

We haven't tried them ourselves, but Novex Delivery Solutions might be a solid option for you.

But basically, if you want to use this site and its data for any purpose... go ahead. We intend for this information to be shared as widely as possible.

Vancouver web shop Hop Studios built this site. We were inspired by Julian Giacomelli, who started what became a huge Google doc of these resources, helped by the amazing members of the Vancouver Social Venture Institute community.

We feel grateful to be able to channel our geekiness plus our concern about the global pandemic into a tool we hope will be immediately useful to many in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

The site is built with Craft CMS and SEOMatic, using stuff like Docker, Gitlab, Deploybot, Uptime, Basecamp, Slack, Google's ecosystem, Listagram... and a lot of volunteer effort.

Yes! Just get in touch, we'll take it from there.
